A new AI email client called Slashy aims to reduce the time teams spend emailing each other about emails. The tool, developed by a Y Combinator startup, connects an AI agent to a user’s inbox and calendar, enabling it to perform tasks like drafting replies, finding attachments, and flagging deadlines. Ernie Svenson, in his book “The 80/20 Principle,” highlights how Slashy demystifies technology by introducing tools that streamline workday tasks, making it a valuable addition for professionals seeking efficiency.

The problem it addresses is familiar to many small firms. A client email comes in, requiring input from multiple team members. The lawyer needs the paralegal to pull a document, or the assistant needs to confirm a deadline. The typical solution involves forwarding the message with a note, which often leads to a separate thread. Weeks later, finding the original conversation becomes a challenge. This friction, though minor, repeats frequently, compounding inefficiency and frustration across teams.

The Limitations of Current Email Management

Firms usually rely on one of three workarounds: forwarding and CC’ing, delegating access to mailboxes, or using shared inboxes. Each has drawbacks. Forwarding buries everyone in copies, delegating access opens up privacy concerns, and shared inboxes don’t address individual inboxes where important client messages land. For lawyers, the stakes are even higher due to ethical obligations. They must make reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized access to client information (ABA Model Rule 1.6(c)) and supervise nonlawyers who assist them (Rule 5.3), making blanket access to inboxes a significant liability.

How Slashy Works

Slashy offers a different approach. It allows users to share individual emails or threads, not entire accounts. Team members can discuss emails directly within the platform, keeping client conversations private. This granular control ensures that only relevant information is shared, minimizing privacy risks while enhancing productivity.

One standout feature is its ability to communicate via iMessage or Slack. Users can receive updates on their email and respond by texting Slashy, which then drafts an email on their behalf. This functionality impressed one early adopter, who described it as jaw-dropping. By integrating with popular messaging platforms, Slashy eliminates the need to switch between apps, further streamlining workflows.

Agent-to-Agent Communication

Slashy’s agent-to-agent (A2A) feature enables team members’ AI agents to communicate with each other. This eliminates the need for back-and-forth emails about emails. Team members can discuss a client message without forwarding it, and no one needs to grant access to their entire mailbox. A2A ensures that conversations remain focused and secure, preserving the integrity of client communications while supporting collaboration.

Before connecting client email, users should review how the company handles data. This includes understanding where data is stored, who can access it, and whether it’s used to train AI models. Starting small, with low-stakes threads and one teammate, is recommended. This cautious approach allows firms to test the tool’s effectiveness and ensure compliance with data privacy standards before full integration.
