RFK Jr. Claims No Legal Residence to Vote
RFK Jr. claims he cannot legally vote in the Los Angeles mayoral election due to a court ruling that he lacks a legal residence, contradicting public records.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says he cannot legally vote in the upcoming Los Angeles mayoral election because a court declared he has no legal residence, a claim that contradicts public records.
Kennedy was asked at a press conference in Los Angeles if he was registered to vote in the city’s upcoming race. He declined to answer the question directly, instead describing his situation as a dilemma.
“I’m in a very strange position,” Kennedy said. “Because when I ran for president [as an independent], the Democratic Party sued me first to get me off the ballot in 12 states, including New York and California. And then when I, um, when I endorsed President Trump, they sued me to keep me on the ballot in those same states.”
“And in the course of one of those lawsuits, it was declared that I had no legal residence, and so it’s a—I’m in a dilemma where I literally have no state where I can legally vote right now,” Kennedy continued. “I’m probably the only person in the country who’s a legal citizen who has that dilemma, but I’m still trying to figure it out before the next election.”
The judge in the New York case did not declare that Kennedy has no legal residence anywhere, but rather that he lied on his ballot filings by claiming to be a New York resident. The judge described the claim as a “sham.”

The court held that while Kennedy was a New York resident at one point, he moved to California in 2014. The evidence showed he still resided there in 2024, despite his introduction of a New York falconry license as proof of residency. The ruling rejected his argument that the license was sufficient to establish a home in the state.
While Kennedy has homes in multiple locations, including a property in Los Angeles, the ruling focused on his primary residence for voting purposes. A citizen who moves frequently without establishing a new domicile for voting is not automatically disenfranchised; they simply fail to register in the state where they actually live.
It is unclear why Kennedy has not registered to vote in California or elsewhere, given his documented time in the state and ownership of property in the D.C. area.
According to Realtor.com, Kennedy bought a townhouse in Georgetown last April for $4.43 million. The listing described the 4,876-square-foot, four-bedroom home as having “state-of-the-art design,” a chef’s kitchen, double-height gallery, walk-through wine-cellar, cozy rear terrace, and dual fireplaces.
